Remarks: Hayir is Turkish for no, and Nazim Hikmet was Turkey’s most widely read modern poet. Hikmet’s avowed Marxism and extended stays in the USSR made him the darling of Communist Party presses and fronts like the Vienna-based World Peace Council (WPC). In this May Day 1955 issue of the WPC’s semimonthly Bulletin, “The Little Dead Girl’s” relevance to the Cold War is made plain in the second stanza:
